Four young would-be heroes are on the way to the city of Arion when they cross a bridge and are ambushed by a group of Slykk.
Two of the Candlestick Quartet are heavily injured. Billy and Johnny take them to the hospital where a strange relic of Thornrose's curse comes into play. As police get involved, Johnny has to struggle to regain some sense of control.
Johnny and Lanette try to reach Billy but Billy is at Thornrose, a child care facility where every caretaker and child disappeared decades ago. And the swamp does not want Johnny to approach. Only they are not alone. Lanette is also at the park. As is a eco-terrorist group. And Upton Reece's family. And a strange pale creature who is seeming to take an interest in Johnny's actions.
