Faruin is joining Barston and Derron in the fight. A quick Sunday "intermission" to add a new character.

The fights so far have reminded me how slog-gy fights can be when it is two verses a horde. Even using the Powerful Blows optional rule, it can be several rounds just to work through. An additional character is welcome just to balance the time-sink required. With the development that Faruin is still alive (at least for now), I think it might be nice to build up her up as a slightly more novice character and add her to the series for the moment. Will she still stay after Yewsforth? We'll figure it out.

Creating Faruin

We know she is a priest of Galana and a completely random description has her as red-headed (it was just a way to toss in some flavor1). We know she can handle a sword. We know she had armor. In such a set-up, she is then a priest who is maybe better at fighting that priest-things for now.

Let's draw two cards to give some flavor:

  • 237 - 2d4+2 Hostile Elves.
  • 283 - A CURSED Elf.

Ok, this might explain part of it. Her and Fenwick are not cousins by birth. She was raised in [ANOTHER PLACE], but her hometown was attacked by hostile elves who are traveling with a strange monstrosity. She lived by hiding as a small child and grew up wanting revenge. The church brought her in, Fenwick's family adopted her.

Is she from Phillia originally? (50/50) >> 88. A twist. Let's roll that up really quick. 06 Betray 18 Competition. Man...this feels really like deja vu. Ok.

Her town was attacked. Someone convinced her that they were trying to get her to safety and brought her as a very young child on a ship but then abandoned her to die on the coast of Phillia. So they could claim her inheritance. This says "family member". Other details will wait.

Then Fenwick found her. Raised her up as a cousin. Others in the community taught her to fight. But she is still a bit young.

We'll set her at a Novice level. This gives her 5 points to spend across her stats. We'll spend 1 on Skill. 0 on Stamina. 2 on Luck. 2 on Magic. This gives her...

  • Skill: 5 Whoops, make that 6 due to human starting bonus.
  • Stamina: 8
  • Luck: 10
  • Magic: 2

She is human, so she gets the standard Special Skills. She also gets 1 2-point skill and 4 1-point skills. Sword will be her 2-point. Armor will be one of her 1-point. Magic-Priestly for another. And she gets a "free" Movement or Stealth skill. Sneaking will be that.

For the other 3, let's go with Language: Phillian [since she speaks it but it's not the language she was raised as], Awareness, and...I don't know...Hunting. She was much more about hunting game than helping with the farms. This ends up looking like this for her Special Skills:

  • Swords: 2
  • Armor: 1
  • Magic-Priestly: 1
  • World-Lore: 1
  • East Phillian Lore: 1
  • Religion Lore: 1
  • Sneaking: 1
  • East Phillian: 4
  • Common Phillian: 1
  • Awareness: 1
  • Hunting: 1

For her Talent*, I like the idea of giving her Warrior Priest from the Priests Companion. When fighting demons and undead, she can use her MAGIC in place of her SKILL. Right now, that will not be obvious, but as she grows in her magical powers, she will be a right smiter of evil. If she lives.

* Doug's Note: Thinking about this, I'll give her a second talent. She might not ever be in the story long enough for the first to matter. I like Holy. Once per day she may double the effects of one of her priestly powers.

Her priest powers are:

  • Cure Poison/Disease
  • Create Food/Water
  • Heal
  • She can call on Galana's blessing to entangle her enemies in vegetation, if there is any...

She doesn't really have anything but the Black-Bladed Sword. We'll say it is +1 Damage but on a Fumble it has a 4:6 chance of shattering.

  1. I think wanted to pick a photo and red-headed + priestess photos were a bit scarce, the one picked is largely because it just fit the requirements of speedy-random world creation. ↩︎
